Argentina Senate to debate Martín Vauthier's appointment to BCRA

The Argentine Senate is preparing to debate the appointment of economist Martín Vauthier as a director of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) through 2028. If approved, Vauthier would be the first official to receive legislative backing for this institution under the current framework.

Vauthier, who has close ties to Economy Minister Luis Caputo, was appointed to the BCRA board in March. His professional background includes serving on the board of the Bank for Foreign Trade and Investment (BICE) and working with the consultancy Anker Latinoamérica.

The appointment discussion occurs alongside a push by the La Libertad Avanza bloc to reform the BCRA. Proposed reforms include prohibiting financial assistance to the nation and its provinces, as well as establishing a new system for the removal of officials. The reform faces resistance from members of the UCR, PRO, and various provincial blocs.
