Argentina industry and construction show slight August rebound

According to data from INDEC, Argentina's manufacturing industry and construction sectors showed a slight monthly rebound in August 2026, but both continue to face significant year-on-year declines.

Manufacturing production rose 1.9% compared to July, following a 5.1% drop in the previous month. However, the sector remains 3.2% lower than in August 2025, with an accumulated contraction of 2.7% for the first eight months of the year. Performance varied by sector: petroleum refining, chemicals, and plastics grew by 3.6% monthly, while machinery and equipment saw a sharp 24% year-on-year collapse, driven by low demand for agricultural machinery and domestic appliances.

The construction sector recorded a 0.4% monthly increase in deseasonalized terms, yet fell 4.4% compared to the same month last year. While the sector maintains a slight cumulative growth of 0.8% for the year, key inputs like asphalt (-18.4%) and gypsum (-17%) showed heavy declines.

Economic analysts note that while the monthly uptick provides temporary relief, the underlying trend remains weak. The manufacturing sector is currently at its lowest production level since June 2024, and the construction sector's trend-cycle indicator has declined for four consecutive months.
