Argentina strengthens maritime surveillance and naval infrastructure
Argentina is strengthening its maritime and territorial surveillance through enhanced satellite monitoring and strategic infrastructure projects. The Prefectura Naval Argentina and the National Commission for Space Activities (CONAE) are advancing the Integrated Electronic Sea Surveillance System (SIVEMAR). This system utilizes SAOCOM radar satellites to monitor the Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEEA), the 201-mile limit, and the Continental Shelf. The radar technology allows for continuous monitoring during the night and through adverse weather, helping to detect vessels that disable their Automatic Identification System (AIS) to hide fishing activities or navigation risks.
Simultaneously, President Javier Milei has revitalized plans for an Integrated Naval Base near Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. The project aims to consolidate Argentina's presence in the Antarctic region and secure strategic maritime passages between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The development follows the administration's stance against British oil exploitation near the Malvinas Islands and seeks to bolster national projection in a zone of increasing international interest.
