Argentina supermarket sales slump deepens in early 2026
Supermarket sales across Argentina continued to fall in the first four months of 2026. National data showed a 3.7% year‑on‑year decline in supermarket sales and a 5.0% drop for wholesale supermarkets in April, while shopping‑center revenues fell 5.9%. The sector recorded a 3.3% year‑on‑year contraction for the first quarter, despite a modest 0.8% month‑on‑month increase from March.
In the province of Jujuy, supermarket turnover fell 10.4% year‑on‑year in the first four months, with a 6.6% drop in April at constant prices. Nominal sales rose 22% because of higher prices, not higher volume. Electronics and home‑goods posted the strongest price‑adjusted gains, while the average basket price in Jujuy remained well above regional averages, reflecting the province’s high cost of living.
