Argentina survey reveals high debt levels for food expenses

A survey conducted by the Observatorio Villero de La Poderosa, supported by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, reveals that debt is increasingly being used to cover essential living expenses in Argentina. Among the 643 people interviewed across seven provinces, 70.5% reported taking on debt specifically to afford food.

The study, which included participants from various regions such as Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, and Córdoba, found that respondents held an average of 2.1 debts each, with 33% accumulating three or more. The research highlights that debt is not limited to traditional banks or credit cards; many individuals rely on virtual wallets, local merchants, moneylenders, and friends or family to manage costs. Additionally, nearly one-third of those surveyed reported being unable to meet their financial obligations.
