Argentina teachers' union CTERA calls nationwide strike for Aug 3 FAST-MOVING
The Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación (CTERA) announced a 24‑hour national teachers’ strike for Monday, 3 August 2024. The walkout will shut all public schools – initial, primary and secondary – across Argentina, coinciding with the return to classes after the winter break in Buenos Aires, the City of Buenos Aires, Chaco and Santiago del Estero.
CTERA’s demands include an urgent convocation of the Paritaria Nacional Docente to negotiate salaries and working conditions, restitution of the Fondo Nacional de Incentivo Docente (FONID) and other national education funds, approval of a new Educational Financing Law, and rejection of the proposed Ley de Libertad Educativa. The union says the government’s refusal to call the bargaining table has deepened the “desfinanciamiento” of the education system and eroded teachers’ purchasing power.
Other unions have pledged support. The Asociación de Trabajadores del Estado (ATE) announced its own national strike and a march on the Ministry of Economy, while the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) launched an August‑long plan of actions in the education sector. Provincial bodies such as the Unión de Educadores de la Provincia de Córdoba (UEPC) and the Agrupación Tucumana de Educadores Provinciales (ATEP) have also joined the strike. Early participation data from Jujuy show modest adherence, with around 20‑23 % of medium‑level teachers and less than 5 % of higher‑level staff joining the protest.
