Argentina teaching career marked by long delays in job stability

A report by Argentinos por la Educación, featuring research from CIPPEC, reveals significant labor instability within Argentina’s teaching profession. The study, titled “Desde la formación hasta la jubilación: ¿cómo es la carrera docente en Argentina?”, indicates that job tenure (titularización) is often achieved late in a professional's life.

Key findings show that 52% of teachers under the age of 25 work as substitutes. Stability increases slowly; only 40% of teachers aged 30 to 39 have secured permanent positions, while 39% remain in substitute roles. It is not until the 40 to 49 age bracket that a majority (61%) achieves tenure, meaning it takes an average of 15 years from the start of classroom work to reach job stability.

The report also highlights structural challenges, including a lack of uniform regulations across the 24 jurisdictions, which results in varying entry requirements and promotion criteria. Furthermore, professional advancement is limited by a scarcity of leadership roles, as management positions represent only about 10% of total teaching posts. Salary peaks typically occur between the ages of 45 and 54.
