Argentina teens betting surge ahead of 2026 World Cup

A study by the Cruz Roja Argentina, supported by the Buenos Aires Education Ministry, found that six out of ten adolescents have placed or know someone who has placed online sports bets since the start of the 2026 World Cup. Betting begins as early as 13‑14 years old and is more common among males aged 15‑18. Experts warn that early exposure to gambling apps can foster addiction, anxiety, and reduced interest in other activities, especially as teenagers imitate parents who use credit cards for betting.

The report highlights that most teens receive little discussion about gambling risks at home or school, prompting the Education Ministry to launch a awareness campaign with pedagogical materials for families. Psychologist Clara Raznoszczyk Schejtman emphasizes the need for parental screen monitoring, stronger parental controls, and alternative recreational options to curb illegal betting by minors.
