Argentina textile industry faces production collapse and closures
The Argentine textile industry is facing a severe downturn, with production dropping 26.5% between January and May. According to INDEC, capacity utilization in June was only 46.6%, significantly lower than the industrial average. The Federation of Textile Industries of Argentina (FITA) reported that 115 establishments ceased operations in the first four months of the year.
In La Plata, the historic textile firm Clan Issime announced its permanent closure after 53 years of operation. The owner cited a combination of tax pressure, depressed domestic consumption, and intense competition from imports as the primary reasons for the shutdown.
Retail sales for small and medium-sized textile enterprises also declined, with a 5.6% year-on-year drop in July. Business owners have expressed concerns regarding rising fixed costs, expensive financing, and a surge in imported garments.
