Argentina to build Integrated Naval Base in Ushuaia
The Argentine government has announced the reactivation of the Integrated Naval Base project in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. The initiative aims to strengthen national presence in the South Atlantic and Antarctica, while also supporting sovereignty claims over the Malvinas Islands.
Defense Minister Carlos Presti and Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno visited the site to review the project. The government plans to allocate over $300,000 million for the construction, with the total investment to be detailed in the 2027 Budget. Officials confirmed the project will be funded entirely through state resources without external financing.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with a projected completion date by the end of 2029. The base is intended to serve as a strategic logistical and operational hub, enhancing maritime and aerial surveillance and supporting Antarctic scientific and military missions. Local authorities in Ushuaia and the Tierra del Fuego province have expressed support for the project, noting its potential for regional economic development and improved logistics.
