Lionel Messi retires from Argentina national team

Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from the Argentina national team at age 39. The decision follows Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final and the recent passing of his father. Messi stated in a social media post that he felt he had “nothing more to give” after a 21-year international career.

In response, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has organized a nationwide tribute. All professional football matches in Argentina this weekend, spanning men’s, women’s, and various divisional leagues, will pause in the 10th minute for a 60-second round of applause to honor his legacy. Additionally, stadiums with screens have been instructed to broadcast an institutional video dedicated to the player before matches.

Messi leaves the international stage as Argentina's all-time leader in appearances (207) and goals (125). He will continue his club career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
