Mexico's Security Secretary to attend DEA drug control summit in Argentina
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, will attend the 40th International Drug Control Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The summit, organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Argentine government, is scheduled to take place from August 18 to 20.
Sheinbaum noted that the decision to participate was made unanimously by her security cabinet. While the administration had initially hesitated due to historical tensions between Mexico and the DEA, the cabinet concluded it was vital for Mexico to present its own security strategy and results directly to the international community. Harfuch intends to showcase Mexico's progress in reducing homicides and high-impact crimes, emphasizing a policy of coordination without subordination to the United States.
The conference, themed ‘Justice through strength and unity,’ aims to foster international cooperation to combat transnational crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and narco-terrorism. The event is expected to host delegates from over 100 countries and hundreds of security officials.
