Argentina to invest $5 million in film heritage preservation

A collaboration agreement was signed during the Mar del Plata Film Festival to preserve Argentina's cinematic heritage. The project involves an investment of approximately $5 million to renovate a building belonging to the Archivo General de la Nación and relocate the Cinemateca del Incaa to the site.

The Cinemateca del Incaa currently operates out of a rented facility that lacks the necessary infrastructure for specialized conservation. The new facility will house over 40,000 film reels in various formats, including polyester, acetate, and highly delicate cellulose nitrate. These materials require specific temperature and humidity controls, as well as specialized fire prevention systems and vaults.

The project also includes the management of thousands of videographic and digital materials, as well as 4,000 containers of film assets from the Archivo General de la Nación that will be placed under the custody of the Incaa. The renovation aims to meet international standards set by organizations such as the International Federation of Film Archives.
