South American tourism shows shifting consumer habits and economic trends

Regional tourism reports indicate shifting consumer behaviors across South America. In the Province of Buenos Aires, the Observatorio de Datos Estratégicos (ODE) reports that while visitor volumes remain high, there is a significant decline in economic impact. The 2026 season saw 8.2 million tourists, but a 25.4% drop in consumption and a 28% contraction in the tourism sector. Travelers are opting for shorter stays and brief weekend escapes rather than traditional long vacations.

In Neuquén, Argentina, the winter season concluded with 284,159 tourists and over 260 billion pesos in accumulated consumption. Favorable weather conditions helped extend activities through September, with occupancy rates rising by seven percentage points compared to 2025.

In Chile, the National Tourism Activity Index (INATUR) recorded a 0.7% year-on-year decrease for the second quarter of 2026. This decline is largely attributed to a reduction in the Argentine market, which caused a 22.8% drop in receptive tourism. However, domestic tourism showed resilience, growing by 1.53% as residents increasingly explore their own country.

Additionally, Argentina anticipates a 4% increase in cruise passengers for the 2026/2027 season, with over 511,000 travelers expected, despite the need for improved port infrastructure.
