Argentina traffic fines increase in La Rioja and Buenos Aires

Traffic fine values have been updated in several Argentine regions, with adjustments linked to fuel prices to maintain economic relevance.

In La Rioja, new rates effective since September 1st have set the maximum penalty for positive breathalyzer tests at $1,712,800. The scale for alcohol-related offenses is divided into three levels: minimum at $428,200, medium at $856,400, and maximum at $1,712,800. Additionally, fines for failing to wear a motorcycle helmet have risen to $160,575.

In the City of Buenos Aires, the 'Unidad Fija' (Fixed Unit) has increased by nearly 19% to $1,173.08 for the period between September 2026 and September 2027. This reference value, which is updated based on premium gasoline prices, determines the cost of all local traffic sanctions. Under this system, speeding fines can range from $175,962 to $4,692,320, while running a red light carries penalties between $351,924 and $1,759,620. Other infractions, such as using a mobile phone while driving or failing to wear a seatbelt, are also subject to these updated costs.
