Argentina trial begins for missing child Loan Peña case
The oral and public trial for the disappearance of five‑year‑old Loan Danilo Peña is set to start on 16 June. Peña was last seen on 13 June 2024 in the rural area of Algarrobal, near the town of 9 de Julio, Corrientes Province. Federal prosecutor Carlos Schaefer says investigators have confirmed the child was taken from the site, but his subsequent whereabouts remain unknown.
Seventeen people have been charged with offenses ranging from kidnapping and illegal detention to false testimony. The case shifted from provincial to federal jurisdiction in June 2024 and is now handled by the Federal Court in Goya and the Prosecutor’s Office for Trafficking and Exploitation of Persons (Protex). The trial will examine the series of arrests, alleged evidence tampering, and conflicting statements made by family members and suspects.
The proceedings have drawn nationwide attention and international interest, highlighting concerns over child protection and the effectiveness of Argentine criminal investigations.
