Argentina trial over Diego Maradona's death examines medical payments
A criminal trial in Argentina is investigating the circumstances surrounding former football star Diego Maradona's death. Testimony revealed that the neuro‑surgeon Leopoldo Luque and lawyer Matías Morla’s sister, Vanesa Morla, discussed fees and payments for the medical team caring for Maradona in his final months. Luque reportedly asked for a monthly payment to cover visits, prescriptions and other services, while Vanesa Morla emphasized payments in Argentine pesos.
Former accountant Andrea Trimarchi testified that she handled the financial transfers to the doctors and staff on instructions from Matías Morla, but she did not take part in medical decisions. The court heard that several health professionals—including Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Díaz, physician Pedro Di Spagna, nurse Ricardo Almirón, nursing coordinator Mariano Perroni and Swiss Medical representative Nancy Forlini—are charged with simple homicide with eventual intent, facing sentences of eight to twenty‑five years. A separate jury trial will address the case of nurse Dahiana Madrid.
