Argentina university salary deal raises pay and challenges state wage ceiling

University rectors and national unions in Argentina reached a new salary agreement with the government, granting a 24.33%‑21.22% wage increase for June and an additional 3% raise in October. The deal also provides extra funding for scholarships, university hospitals and operating costs. Rector Marcelo Aba of UNICEN called it a step forward but stressed that full compliance with the University Financing Law remains incomplete and that a new negotiation round is scheduled for 15 September.

The agreement is seen as a precedent for broader public‑sector wage talks. The national teachers' union ATE plans to use the university deal as a “contagion effect” to push for salary increases above inflation and a fixed 400,000‑peso supplement in upcoming state‑wide negotiations, aiming to break the low‑wage ceiling imposed by the current economic team.
