Argentina university teachers announce 72-hour national strike

University teachers in Argentina have announced a 72-hour national strike beginning Wednesday, September 30. The strike, organized by major unions including CONADU and CONADU Histórica, aims to demand the full implementation of the University Financing Law (Law 27.795) and a significant salary increase.

Unions are demanding a 33.4% salary recomposition, a figure they argue is necessary to address the loss of purchasing power. This follows a recent negotiation where the government offered a 3% increase, which was rejected by educators. The strike is scheduled to continue through Friday, October 2, and will impact classes and research across national universities nationwide.

The conflict is also centered on a judicial ruling by Federal Judge Martín Cormick, who ordered the government to comply with a precautionary measure regarding university funding within five days, warning of potential daily fines for non-compliance. The Argentine government has indicated it will appeal this ruling. The labor action serves as a precursor to the fifth Federal University March, which is planned for October 15.
