Argentina labor unrest: Steel sector reaches deals as university and municipal workers strike
Argentina is experiencing widespread labor unrest across several sectors. In the industrial sector, the Unión Obrera Metalúrgica (UOM) has reached new salary agreements with steel and metalworking chambers. The steel industry agreement includes a 6% non-remunerative increase for August through October, with a $1,600,000 retroactive bonus. The metalworking sector agreement provides a 23.5% improvement scheduled through March 2027.
In the education sector, university workers have launched a 24-hour national strike. The Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales is demanding the full implementation of the University Financing Law, citing a salary gap exceeding 28% and a lack of funds for scholarships and university hospitals.
Additionally, municipal unions in the province of Buenos Aires, led by Fesimubo, have announced a prolonged plan of struggle. They are protesting low wages and demanding the reactivation of the Municipal Employment Council to address labor conditions.
