Argentina urban waste collection falls 5.7% in May

Urban solid waste generation and collection in Argentina saw a 5.7% year-on-year contraction in May, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). This decline serves as a physical indicator of slowing household consumption, reflecting a decrease in the purchase of food, beverages, and everyday products.

Compared to April, the decrease was 5.1%, while the first five months of the year showed a slight increase of 0.1%. The reduction in waste tonnage is directly linked to lower domestic demand for packaged goods, including plastics, cardboard, and organic remains. As real household income decreases, the resulting contraction in mass consumption immediately impacts the final stage of the product cycle, reducing the volume of waste sent to urban disposal centers.
