Argentina Wage Council fails to reach minimum wage agreement

Negotiations at the Wage Council for Argentina's Minimum, Vital, and Mobile Salary (SMVM) have failed, leaving the national government to set the new amount by decree. The breakdown occurred after representatives from the CGT and both CTA unions withdrew from the plenary meeting, citing an insufficient proposal from the business sector.

Labor unions demanded an immediate increase to $911,202, with a target of $993,300 by December 2026. In contrast, employer representatives proposed a staggered increase consisting of 1.8% for September and 1.7% monthly increments from October through April, which would only bring the minimum wage to approximately $468,000 by April 2027.

The current minimum wage stands at $376,600. Unions have criticized the loss of purchasing power and the government's decision to hold meetings virtually rather than in person. Additionally, the government has clarified it will not impose a mandatory $1,000,000 wage floor, leaving such decisions to individual sectors.
