Argentina wholesale dollar breaks $1,500 barrier to hit new nominal record
The Argentine wholesale dollar has broken the psychological barrier of $1,500 for the first time, reaching a nominal record of $1,510. This movement represents a 0.7% daily increase and marks the largest single-day rise for the wholesale rate since June 3.
Market analysts suggest the breach indicates a shift in government strategy, moving toward greater exchange rate flexibility to alleviate pressure on local interest rates. Previously, the administration had used various tools, including interventions in the futures market and the sale of dollar-linked bonds, to maintain the rate below the $1,500 threshold.
In the retail market, the official dollar at Banco Nación closed at $1,480 for purchase and $1,530 for sale. The informal blue dollar was quoted at $1,545 for purchase and $1,565 for sale. Financial segments such as the MEP dollar and the CCL (Contado con Liquidación) also remained elevated, with the latter reaching levels near $1,600.
Despite the rise, the current rate remains significantly below the Central Bank's exchange rate band ceiling of approximately $1,871.95. The Central Bank has continued to record positive reserve accumulation, with gross international reserves reaching approximately $50.9 billion.
