Argentina wildlife surveys show critical bird numbers and booming guanaco population

Annual monitoring of migratory steamer ducks (cauquenes) in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province, conducted since 2007 by the Fundación Azaray and the UNS GEKKO group, indicates that populations of the common, gray‑headed and critically endangered red steamer ducks remain at concerning levels with no sign of significant recovery. Threats include historic persecution, exotic predators, habitat loss and wind‑farm development. The program also links local schools to conservation education.

A separate survey of guanacos in Santa Cruz Province, covering 82 % of the territory and carried out by the Provincial Agrarian Council, WCS Argentina and CONICET researchers, recorded over 2 million individuals in 2023 and projects the population could exceed 2.5 million by 2026 if the 8.7 % annual growth rate continues. The data provide a basis for future management and conservation policies for the species.
