South America issues wind, rain and frost warnings for early July 2026

Argentina’s civil protection agency issued a yellow alert for strong winds on 1 July, with gusts up to 100 km/h expected in San Juan’s districts of 9 de Julio, Albardón, Capital, Chimbas, Rawson, Santa Lucía, Pocito, Rivadavia and Sarmiento. Authorities warned of reduced visibility, falling debris and heightened forest‑fire risk, urging residents to secure property and avoid open flames.

Chile’s meteorological directorate announced a wind alert for the Antofagasta and Atacama regions on 1‑2 July, forecasting 80‑100 km/h gusts and possible sand‑storm conditions that could impair road safety and mining operations. Simultaneously, a frost warning was issued for Valparaíso to Biobío, with temperatures expected to drop to –4 °C, prompting agricultural advisories on irrigation and crop protection.

In Ecuador, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) declared a rain alert from 1 to 4 July, covering the coastal, inter‑andean and Amazonian zones. Expected moderate‑to‑strong precipitation could cause flooding, landslides and increased river flows, especially in Esmeraldas, Manabí, and Amazonian provinces. The institute also highlighted an elevated risk of forest fires in the dry season and advised against open burning.

The Chilean Weather Service confirmed the official onset of the El Niño phenomenon, noting a gradual impact on temperature and precipitation patterns across the country.

Across the three nations, officials recommended staying informed through official channels, securing loose objects, limiting travel in affected areas and reporting emergencies promptly.
