Argentina wine industry faces declining global market share
Argentina's wine industry is facing a significant decline in global market share, according to a report by the Institute of Studies on Argentine and Latin American Reality (IERAL) of the Mediterranean Foundation. The country's share of global wine exports dropped from 4.7% in 2008 to just 2.1% projected for 2025.
Mendoza, the nation's primary wine-producing region, is particularly affected. The report indicates that the province exported 36% less bottled varietal wine in 2026 compared to 2010, while the real price obtained was 7% lower. During the first half of 2026, the sector experienced a combination of lower volumes and reduced prices, impacting winery profitability.
While global wine consumption fell by 15% between 2017 and 2025, specialists note that Argentina has lost ground even in growing markets like Brazil and the United States. The report suggests that internal factors, including logistics, commercial strategy, production costs, and the ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences, are contributing to the decline alongside exchange rate issues.
