Argentina winter shelters close amid upcoming cold fronts

Winter shelters for homeless populations in Argentina have concluded their seasonal operations. In Mendoza, the official winter operation ended on August 31, having provided shelter to approximately 80 people during the coldest months. Municipal authorities, along with church and business representatives, are preparing a report to evaluate the season, focusing on labor reintegration and family reunification efforts to prevent future homelessness.

In Salta, the Hogar de Noche has closed its doors until the 2027 winter season. The facility had been hosting an average of 54 to 56 people per night, providing accommodation, healthcare, and employment assistance. The closure comes as a polar front approaches the region, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 2°C.

Despite the end of formal shelter periods, authorities in Mendoza remain on alert due to the potential arrival of the ‘Super Niño’ phenomenon. The Direction of Climatic Contingencies has confirmed that daily monitoring of vulnerable populations on the streets will continue to respond to emerging needs.
