Argentina faces surge in corporate crisis filings and labor lawsuits

Argentina is experiencing a significant rise in both corporate instability and labor litigation. According to data from the Ministry of Human Capital, 163 Preventive Crisis Procedures (PPC) were opened by July 31, 2026, nearly matching the 164 recorded during the entirety of 2025. These procedures are used by companies facing imminent bankruptcy to manage mass layoffs or reduce severance costs.

Simultaneously, the Workers' Compensation (ART) system is facing a surge in lawsuits. In August 2026, 14,966 new claims were filed, marking an 11.3% year-on-year increase and the second-highest monthly total in history. The Union of Workers' Compensation Insurers (UART) reports that 87,553 cases have accumulated in the first eight months of the year, with projections suggesting 2026 could end with a record exceeding 138,000 lawsuits.

Geographically, the province of Buenos Aires recorded its highest monthly volume with over 6,000 claims. Notably, Santa Fe reached a historic peak of 2,731 lawsuits in August, a 24.8% increase that saw it surpass the City of Buenos Aires in litigation volume. This rise in legal actions occurs despite a reported decrease in actual workplace accidents and illnesses.
