Argentina's 2026 sugarcane harvest advances as Bolivia's stalls amid rain and fuel shortages

Argentina's 2026 sugarcane harvest (zafra) in the northwest is progressing steadily. Sixteen mills across Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy have processed over 2.5 million tonnes of raw cane, producing more than 129 000 tonnes of sugar and 57.5 million litres of hydrated alcohol, with a large portion converted to bio‑ethanol. The campaign is in its 37th‑38th day and remains active despite recent rains.

In Bolivia, the Guabirá sugar mill reports that heavy rains have flooded fields and halted operations for nearly two weeks, while a shortage of fuel from YPFB has further constrained production. The mill is grinding about 22 600 tonnes of cane per day but fears the accumulated delay could push the harvest into the rainy season, jeopardising its target of 3.5‑3.7 million tonnes. Export contracts are at risk, with logistical bottlenecks preventing any sugar or alcohol shipments.

Both countries face distinct challenges as the 2026 harvest unfolds, highlighting the regional impact of weather and energy supply on the sugar industry.
