Argentina's Casa de Moneda to Print 700 Million Nigerian Naira Notes
Argentina’s state mint, the Casa de Moneda, has signed a contract to produce 700 million naira banknotes for the Central Bank of Nigeria. The agreement, reached with British printer De La Rue, will keep the mint’s production lines operating for roughly one and a half to two years, using the facility’s idle capacity.
The deal follows Nigeria’s recent cash‑crisis after a hurried redesign of its currency in 2022‑2023, which led to bank runs and protests. De La Rue, now owned by the U.S. fund Atlas, delegated part of its Nigerian order to the Argentine plant to utilise idle machinery after the Argentine Central Bank reduced local printing. The contract also comes as the Casa de Moneda is listed among assets the Argentine government may later privatise.
