Argentina's Cemetery Heritage Movement Gains Momentum

Photographer Virginia Martín has spent years walking the cemeteries of Trenque Lauquen, recording mausoleums, sculptures and inscriptions with her phone. She shares the images online, saying, “En esta actividad de recorrer los cementerios se aunán todo lo que a mí me gustaba: viajar, investigar, la arquitectura antigua, las fotos.” Her work aims to preserve the hidden architectural history of Argentine burial sites.

Separately, Camila Quilez, a seamstress from Mar del Plata, founded the Instagram community Cementerios Argentina. The page collects photographs, documents and stories from contributors nationwide, creating a collaborative archive of funeral heritage. Quilez organizes guided tours and workshops such as “Diseñá tu lápida,” and stresses that “Muchas personas viajan al exterior, visitan cementerios históricos y museos, pero no conocen el cementerio de su propia ciudad.” Both initiatives seek to raise public awareness of the cultural and historical value of Argentine cemeteries.
