Argentina Chamber of Deputies approves “Ley Joaquín” for sports safety

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has unanimously approved a report for the “Ley Joaquín” (Joaquín Law), a legislative initiative aimed at mandating safety measures for sports and recreational activities to prevent accidents.

The bill, authored by Deputy Luciana Potenza, requires the strict installation, anchoring, maintenance, and inspection of equipment such as soccer, hockey, handball, and rugby goals, basketball hoops, volleyball net posts, and playground structures in both public and private spaces.

The law is named in memory of Joaquín Gatto, a 12-year-old boy who died in 2024 after an improperly secured soccer goal fell on him during a school camp in San Pedro, Buenos Aires province. The tragedy, which occurred due to a lack of regulatory anchors, prompted his family to launch the campaign “Que el juego no cueste la vida” (May the game not cost a life). Having already received a favorable report from the Sports Commission in June, the project is now ready for a vote in the main chamber.
