Argentina's Chamber of Deputies may expand to 359 seats

An analysis of Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies suggests that the body should expand from 257 to 359 members to align with current census data and constitutional criteria. This expansion aims to correct the current imbalance between provinces with low populations and high-density districts like Buenos Aires.

Tierra del Fuego is identified as one of the districts with the highest relative overrepresentation, meaning its number of deputies is disproportionately high compared to its population. Under the proposed update, Tierra del Fuego would not lose legislators, but other jurisdictions would gain seats to achieve a more equitable distribution.

The current composition is governed by Law 22.847, enacted in 1983. This law maintains representation levels from March 1976 and uses a formula based on population increments. Updating the Chamber is a recurring debate driven by the need to comply with Article 45 of the National Constitution, which mandates representation adjustments following a census.
