Argentina's UNER and CNEA Face Major Funding Cuts and Scholarship Collapse

The council of the Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos (UNER) warned that recent dismissals and budget reductions at the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) threaten Argentina's scientific sovereignty. Over 170 staff members were let go, and the university called for transparent information and dialogue to preserve the nuclear agency’s strategic roles in policy advising, technology development, and radioactive waste management.

A separate request for public information revealed that Progresar scholarships at UNER have fallen sharply. Beneficiaries dropped from a peak of 5,519 students in 2023 to just 2,501 in 2025, a 54.7% decline, with especially steep losses in Medicine, Public Accounting, Kinesiology and other high‑enrollment programs. The ministry also reported no new construction projects at the university since 2023. UNER has demanded that the national government safeguard the continuity of its scientific and educational capacities.
