Argentina winter tourism slump as World Cup and holidays curb demand
Tourist activity during Argentina's long Independence Day weekend was the weakest on record, with 993,683 travelers generating about $216.6 million in direct spending—a 3.5 % drop in average daily spend and a 33 % fall in hotel bookings versus the previous year. The slowdown was linked to the World Cup, which kept many fans at home, and the staggered start of winter school breaks, prompting families to postpone trips.
In the Atlantic city of Mar del Plata, hotel occupancy hit only 25 % and retail sales fell 5.7 % year‑on‑year, while the sector bets on a rebound during the upcoming school vacation period. Meanwhile, Aerolíneas Argentinas added six extra flights to Miami to serve fans travelling abroad for the tournament.
The Fiesta Nacional del Invierno in Tierra del Fuego attracted around 4,000 visitors, featuring ice‑skating shows, live music and a tribute to local Olympic athletes. More than 20 media outlets from Brazil, Colombia and Argentina covered the event, underscoring the province’s push to raise its international profile.
To counter the broader downturn, the Cámara Argentina de Turismo launched the “InvernAR” digital campaign, promoting domestic winter travel through the “Elegí Argentina” platform and aiming to sustain employment and regional economies throughout the season.
