Argentina's cold‑zone gas tariff benefit faces Senate review and municipal push

The Union of Commercial and Industrial Enterprises (UCIP) has sent a formal letter to the Argentine Senate urging lawmakers to vote with full awareness of the impact of the proposed amendment to the cold‑zone tariff regime. UCIP cites its own retail‑sales data showing a 2.6% year‑on‑year drop in April 2026 and warns that altering the benefit for roughly 250,000 households in Mar del Plata would further tighten disposable income and hurt local retailers. The union calls for the continuation of the cold‑zone benefit for residential users and its extension to commercial and industrial activities.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Olavarría has launched a campaign urging residents to sign petitions in support of the existing cold‑zone scheme. The campaign follows a partial sanction by the lower house of a bill that would limit the current 30‑50% discount on gas bills to only the gas price component, removing discounts on the distribution and transport charges. Officials have set up signing tables at numerous public sites across the city and surrounding districts to demonstrate community backing for the regime.
