Argentina's Corrientes and Chaco Brace for Extreme July Weather

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a yellow alert for storms in Corrientes province, covering the cities of Ituzaingó, San Miguel, Santo Tomé, San Martín, General Alvear and Paso de los Libres. Residents are warned of isolated strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, occasional hail, strong gusts and intense electrical activity, with expected precipitation of 20‑50 mm. Temperatures will stay between 9 °C and 15 °C, and authorities advise limiting travel, securing outdoor objects and avoiding exposure to wind and lightning.

In neighbouring Chaco province, a polar air mass will plunge temperatures to a historic low of 3 °C in Resistencia on 3 July, with daytime highs barely reaching 15 °C. The freeze is expected to produce suburban frosts and a rise in respiratory complaints. A rapid shift is forecast for later in the month as warm tropical air moves in, bringing a “mini‑summer” with highs of 28‑30 °C between 21‑23 July, prompting health officials to caution vulnerable groups about the abrupt temperature swing.
