Argentina's Córdoba politicians clash over land ownership law and provincial funding

In the lead‑up to a Senate session on the proposed Land Law, which would lift the 15% cap on foreign ownership of rural land, Córdoba senators faced street protests and heated debate. Senators Luis Juez and Carmen Álvarez Rivero are expected to back the executive’s draft, while fellow senator Alejandra Vigo publicly opposes it, warning of risks to national sovereignty and resource management.

Separately, national senator Gerardo Zamora accused Córdoba Governor Martín Llaryora of lacking provincial funds to pay the mid‑year aguinaldo and of relying on a national loan. Zamora said several provinces, including Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Jujuy, had to borrow from the Treasury, a practice he claims undermines provincial autonomy and reflects broader fiscal strain.

Both episodes highlight growing political tension in Argentina over land policy and inter‑governmental financing as the country heads toward upcoming elections.
