Javier Milei pushes Central Bank reform and eyes 2027 re‑election FAST-MOVING

Argentina’s President Javier Milei is advancing a reform of the Carta Orgánica del Banco Central that would prohibit the central bank from financing the Treasury through money‑creation. The proposal, presented by Milei in a national broadcast, is backed by Economy Minister Luis Caputo, who called it a “foundational” change and said it is designed to last for the next three decades.

Caputo also stated he has “no doubt” that Milei will be re‑elected in the 2027 presidential election and dismissed expectations that the electoral calendar would disturb the government’s fiscal‑surplus plan. Milei has announced that he has already chosen a vice‑presidential running mate, but will keep the name confidential while urging Congress to eliminate the PASO primary system.

Milei repeatedly highlighted macro‑economic achievements – a fiscal surplus, lower inflation, the removal of foreign‑exchange controls and rebuilding foreign‑exchange reserves – even as recent polls show a majority of Argentines disapprove of his administration and report worsening personal finances.
