Argentina's Economy Minister Luis Caputo clashes with British journalist Piers Morgan after World Cup final

After Argentina lost 1‑0 to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey, British journalist Piers Morgan used his X account to denounce the Argentine players, describing their behaviour as “repugnant” and likening it to the 1982 Falklands conflict. He called the team “a group of violent, disgraceful hooligans” and expressed pleasure at seeing them lose.

Argentina’s economy minister Luis Caputo responded publicly, calling Morgan a “crying, spoiled child” who was “cheering because a team that never played his own side lost”. Caputo demanded Morgan show some dignity and stop humiliating British people, adding that Argentines would celebrate regardless of the result. The exchange, which began after the semifinal win over England, continued through the final, drawing attention to the heated interaction between a government official and a foreign media figure.
