Argentina's former President Cristina Kirchner files appeal to halt $685bn asset seizure in Vialidad case

The Argentine Supreme Court confirmed an updated seizure amount of roughly $685 billion in the Vialidad corruption case, affirming the liability of former President Cristina Kirchner and businessman Lázaro Báez. One day after the ruling, Kirchner and Báez each filed a resource of complaint seeking to delay the execution of the asset seizure. The appeals argue that there is no direct evidence linking the assets of Kirchner’s children, Máximo and Florencia, to the illicit conduct, and aim to prevent the auction of properties such as apartments in Buenos Aires, hotels, and houses in Río Gallegos and El Calafate, as well as a safety‑deposit box containing about $5 million belonging to Florencia Kirchner. The defense, led by lawyer Carlos Beraldi, notes that the complaints do not automatically suspend the court’s order, allowing the courts to continue identifying, valuing, and potentially auctioning the assets. The Financial Information Unit has also requested that seized assets be placed under its administration. The legal maneuvers are expected to extend the execution phase over the coming months.
