Argentina's government negotiates university funding amid pending court ruling

The Argentine government is preparing a new offer to resolve a budget dispute with public universities while awaiting a Supreme Court decision on the university financing law. Officials say they may convene a meeting this week to discuss salary adjustments for faculty, scholarship funding and additional resources for university hospitals.

The executive has proposed a roughly 24% wage increase for professors, an $800 billion allocation for university operations, and extra funds for hospitals and student scholarships. In return, it asks the rectors to withdraw the injunction they filed against the government. University leaders, represented by the National Inter‑University Council (CIN), have rejected the condition, insisting that the law must be upheld. If the court rules against the government, it could be required to disburse about 2.5 trillion pesos to the universities.

Negotiations remain stalled as both sides examine legal options and seek a mutual agreement without the universities having to abandon their legal claim.
