Argentina's hotel and restaurant firms see modest boost from Los Pumas rugby match
Hotel occupancy in San Juan rose to an average of 55% over a long‑weekend, driven primarily by the Los Pumas rugby match, said Tamara Boggian, president of the Provincial Hotel and Gastronomy Association. She noted that the event generated strong internal tourism, while inbound visitors remained low, and stressed the need for a long‑term strategic tourism plan.
In Rosario, restaurant and hotel executives highlighted that the upcoming winter holiday period, rather than the Rugby World Cup, is expected to generate the most significant sales lift. Vice‑president Carlos Mellano of the local hospitality association said the World Cup historically has little impact on gastronomy, citing limited demand except for a few venues such as Pellegrini Avenue and a fan‑fest at the Mercado del Patio. He added that while some establishments may adjust hours for the match, the overall effect on the sector will be modest.
Both leaders agreed that event‑driven tourism can provide short‑term spikes, but sustainable growth will depend on coordinated policies and longer‑term planning.
