Argentina’s IMF Deal Reviewed by Economist Fernando Marull
Economist Fernando Marull said the International Monetary Fund is assessing the social tolerance for Argentina’s fiscal adjustment as the country resumes paying capital on its IMF debt after almost eight years. He described the IMF’s continued support for the government’s program as a “positive gesture,” noting that this is the first capital repayment since the 2018 loan.
Marull projected an improvement in economic activity in the second half of the year, citing falling inflation and the reopening of collective‑bargaining agreements. He argued that Argentina’s current dynamics differ from the crises of 2001 or Greece, with reduced sovereign risk and steadier growth. The appointment of Argentine economist Silvana Tenreyro to a senior IMF role was mentioned, but Marull saw it as a personal merit rather than a direct influence on the country’s plan.
