Argentina's IMF Program Oversight Assigned to Economist Joyce Wong

The International Monetary Fund has appointed Joyce Wong, a senior economist in its Division of Analysis and Strategy, to lead the technical monitoring of the agreement with Argentina. Wong, who previously worked on the Argentine case and accompanied IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during her recent visit, will supervise the country's accounts and guide the next program reviews.

Georgieva's visit included meetings with President Javier Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and Central Bank head Santiago Bausili, as well as a tour of the Vaca Muerta oil field. Hours after the visit, Milei announced a comprehensive reform of the Central Bank charter to strengthen its autonomy, prohibit Treasury financing, and redefine its functions. The proposal will be presented to Congress next week.

Argentina remains the IMF’s largest debtor, with obligations of about 42.5 billion SDR (roughly US$58 billion), representing around 35 % of the Fund’s active portfolio. A demanding repayment schedule begins in 2027, making the program’s performance a central concern for both the government and the IMF, which has reaffirmed its support without additional financing.
