Argentina Senate passes Inocencia Fiscal II tax law

The Argentine Senate has passed the Inocencia Fiscal II law, a key government initiative designed to encourage taxpayers to bring dollars held outside the formal financial system back into the domestic economy. The law was approved with 44 votes in favor and 23 against. Key provisions include the removal of asset limits for the simplified income tax regime and a prohibition preventing public officials, including the President, legislators, and judges, from accessing these tax benefits.

In a separate legislative development, the Senate has reached a majority report to reform gas subsidies in 'cold zones.' The proposed reform aims to restrict subsidies to vulnerable households in specific regions like Patagonia and the Puna, potentially reducing energy deficits but impacting millions of users in cities across Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and other provinces.

Additionally, the Senate is preparing to debate a biofuels reform that proposes increasing mandatory blending cuts for bioethanol from 12% to 15% and for biodiesel from 5% to 10%. While the government secured a victory with the tax law, it continues to face challenges regarding quorum and disagreements with allies over the biofuels and Central Bank charter reforms.
