Argentina's La Matanza and Morón open discount food markets amid economic crisis
The municipality of La Matanza announced new "Puntos de Abaratamiento" in San Justo, offering essential food and household items at up to 50 % lower than traditional stores and an additional 40 % discount for users of the CUENTA DNI card. Mayor Fernando Espinoza cited the severe deterioration of purchasing power, rising salaries lagging behind inflation, and households resorting to buying food in small portions. He warned that wages no longer cover a month’s expenses, describing the situation as a "new calendar" where the month feels like only twelve days.
In the neighboring district of Morón, the municipal market launched a weekend promotion from 29 to 31 May under the provincial "Mercados Bonaerenses" program. The market sells meat, fruits, dairy and bakery items directly from producers to consumers, eliminating intermediaries to keep prices low. Listed discounts include 2 kg cuts of beef for under ARS 20 000 and fruits such as bananas and oranges for a few thousand pesos. Both initiatives aim to provide affordable staples to families struggling with Argentina’s high inflation and stagnant wages.
