Argentina’s Leandro Paredes mulls exit after World Cup final incident

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Argentina lost 1‑0 to Spain. Midfielder Leandro Paredes grabbed defender Eric García’s neck and shoved Spain’s midfielder Gavi. The actions did not result in a red card but sparked widespread criticism.

After the tournament, Paredes told ESPN he is considering quitting the Argentine national team, saying the defeat leaves a lasting pain and that "it will take time to digest what we have gone through." Former players Micah Richards and Wayne Rooney condemned the behaviour. Defender Nicolas Otamendi also announced his retirement from international football, ending a career of 139 caps.
