Cristina Fernández files appeal to halt $685 bn asset seizure

Argentina’s former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner lodged a recurso de queja in an effort to stop the execution and possible auction of assets ordered in the Vialidad corruption case. The appeal follows the Supreme Court’s decision to confirm an updated seizure amount of approximately 684.99 billion pesos, up from the original estimate of about 85 billion. The defense seeks to exclude properties owned by Fernández in Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz, as well as assets linked to her children Máximo and Florencia, arguing insufficient evidence that they stem from the alleged wrongdoing.

The court has already rejected nullity pleas and upheld the revised figure. While the new filing does not automatically suspend enforcement, authorities may continue with asset valuation and eventual liquidation. The case, one of Argentina’s most significant corruption prosecutions, centers on alleged fraudulent administration of 51 public‑works contracts in Santa Cruz. The outcome will determine how much of Fernández’s personal and familial wealth can be recovered by the state.
