Argentina's MetroENERGÍA launches first fully GNC bus line amid regional fuel shortages

MetroENERGÍA is providing natural‑gas supply for the first Argentine public‑transport operation powered entirely by compressed natural gas (CNG). The project with Metropol will replace 150 buses on line 109 of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, beginning with 11 units already in service and aiming to complete the fleet renewal in the coming months. The company has installed a dedicated CNG charging station in the Barracas neighbourhood and said the initiative demonstrates the potential of natural gas as an efficient, lower‑impact urban‑mobility fuel.

At the same time, the La Plata region is facing a severe shortage of CNG fueling points, with only six stations operating. Drivers of taxis, remises and cargo vehicles report long queues of up to 300 metres and fear loss of income, especially as winter temperatures approach. Camuzzi, the gas‑network operator, cites high demand and low temperatures as causes, while the local union is pressing the municipality to enforce a priority ordinance for public‑transport and cargo vehicles during CNG crises.
